Time to get personal: tips when personalising gifts
Whether you are looking for something for the person who has everything, or if you’re after something special for a new baby or a big occasion, personalising a gift guarantees you’re buying a present that they don’t already have – and they definitely won’t forget:
1. Think about what they like
This may sound very obvious, but often, instead of thinking about what a person is truly interested in, we feel like we have to meet a certain budget for a gift to be considered valuable; this doesn’t have to be the case. A personalised gift is often worth a lot more to that important person in your life than a bunch of flowers too big to fit in any vase or an expensive gadget that lies in the corner because no-one can be bothered reading the cryptic instruction manual. A mug with a picture of something significant or a personalised keyring to place on the keys they use every day will be worth a lot more, cost a lot less and last a lot longer than the massively expensive but tiny box of chocolates that was gone within a day.
2. There’s nothing wrong with thinking practical
It’s easy to get carried away trying to find a gift that’s ‘different’ for the person that has everything. Often this means we just buy something that’s completely impractical, like a singing fish or a bottle of wine that can never be opened because apparently its more important that people see the vintage bottle than actually enjoy the beverage. You can find something that’s practical and unique if you personalise it. Think luggage tags, mugs or even a personalised label for a nice bottle of alcohol (you can keep the bottle and still drink the wine or whiskey you know!)
3. Think trends
You may want to get a gift for someone who is always into the latest trends, but you know that the likelihood is they already have every unicorn, flamingo, or whatever the latest trend may be, on the high street. The best way to follow the trend but make their gift unique is to personalise it. That additional bit of thought will buy you a few brownie points too!
4. Think keepsake
For those big occasions, it’s important to make sure that whatever you get someone can withstand the test of time. When you’re looking for a gift for a new baby, for instance, it’s easy to go into your local supermarket or baby shop and buy whatever generic toy looks cute on the shelf. Chances are that that cuddly teddy or picture perfect outfit is going to end up in the local charity shop or passed along to the next baby with no-one to remember who the gift came from in the first place. Personalising a baby gift, or a gift for a child’s significant birthday, will mean your gift will be kept as a keepsake for a long time to come.
Whatever the gift, whoever the person (or animal!), whatever the occasion, personalise it!
